Information
Welcome! I’m stoked that you’re working to develop your bedside ultrasound skills. After learning how to acquire the basic FoCUS images, it’s important to practice as often as you can on real-life patients and also to see as many images as possible. That’s where the quizzes come in. This one reviews the basic anatomy of normal FoCUS studies. It’s a work in progress (I’m adding more and more clips so check back.) Enjoy!

Question 1 of 7
1. Question
What structure is indicated by the arrow?
Correct
Boom! You nailed it, well done! Keep up the good work.
Incorrect
Ah, sorry! You were close but not quite there. This is the anteroseptal wall. Notice that it’s between the left and right ventricles (so it’s one of the two septal walls.) The aortic valve is a more anterior structure, so when you see it associated with one of the septal walls it will be the anteroseptal wall. Make sense?

2. Question
What structure is indicated by the arrow?
Correct
You got it!
Incorrect
Close, but no cigar. Give it another look. You’ll get it right next time.

Question 3 of 7
3. Question
What structure is indicated by the arrow?
Correct
Rock and roll, you’re all over it!
Incorrect
Sorry, I’m sure you were very close! The descending thoracic aorta is located just behind the left atrium and is an important structure to identify. Remember that the descending aorta is outside the pericardium, so pericardial effusion will be found between the heart and aorta. Pleural effusion will appear to abut the aorta.

Question 4 of 7
4. Question
What structure is indicated by the arrow?
Correct
Boom! You nailed it, well done! Keep up the good work.
Incorrect
Ah, sorry! You were close but not quite there. We’re looking at the mitral valve here, between the left atrium and left ventricle. The anterior leaflet typically appears longer and is associated with the aortic valve (which is an anterior structure.)
